Somtheing Special

One of the largest institutes for the archiving and studying of architectural and design based film, needed a new headquarters. The Italian institute, called Image, holds a semi-annual film convention known as Beyond Media which attracts thousands. Situated at the exit of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the project required a means of public passage. The building, based on a distorted Italian palazzo, is conceptualized as a series of programmatic elements that wrap and surround the primary entity, a large central courtyard.  The program is arranged around two user groups; the viewer and the contributor.  Various programmatic elements are connected through multiple circulation paths, which encourage social interaction and interchangeable promenades.

The buildings massing and facades are positioned to be contextual and create public space at the corner.

The courtyard building is lifted at the public plaza to allow the Uffizi's guests to exit to the street.

The three story ring, which houses most of the program is understood as a series of programmatic spaces arranged based on twp major levels of interactivity; the observer and the contributor.

Production Level

The top and most private level of the building, the fourth floor contains space for workshops, archiving, and administration.

The courtyard, the primary void in the project, is a transformable space. The inner lining and roof are operable, allowing the space to be flexible for various events and their subsequent arrangements. A large elevator at the court’s perimeter provides easy access to the large storage room below. The space has the ability to be an open-air atrium or a sealed four-story space.
